A 100-year-old fruitcake has been found in Antarctica. The cake was wrapped in paper in a tin box looks and smells almost edible.
The expedition took shelter in the Cape Adare hut, which had been built by Norwegian Carsten Borchgrevink’s team in 1899 — and left the fruitcake behind. A team has been excavating artifacts in the hut since 2016.
The team that found the cake has been on a tour of Antarctica to recover as many items as possible left by explorers. The team was surprised to find the cake still looked edible, however, it smelled a little bit like rancid butter. What the cake tastes like after a century on the ice will remain a mystery, as it’s unethical for conservators to taste-test their finds.
